Arsenal were left to rue 30 missed chances after dropping points in a 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace at the Emirates Stadium.
The Gunners hit the target nine times and had almost 80% possession but could not convert their superiority into goals. Promoted Palace put on a resilient performance, with goalkeeper Pauline Peyraud-Magnin batting away attempts from Alessia Russo, Chloe Kelly and Mariona Caldentey to earn another clean sheet.
Reigning champions Manchester City continued their winning start to the campaign with a dominant 4-1 victory against Aston Villa. Jade Rose broke the deadlock for City in the early stages, tapping home after Akane Okuma failed to claim a corner. Assisted by Khadija Shaw, Mary Fowler doubled the advantage with a low-driven strike into the bottom-right of the net. Amalie Vangsgaard gave Andrée Jeglertz and his players a fright after converting Chasity Grant’s pass in the 42nd minute, but Shaw returned to the scoresheet after half-time to restore the two-goal cushion. And in added time, City wrapped up the victory when Lauren Hemp’s strike was deflected in by Mathilde Harviken.
Brighton came from two goals down to snatch a last-minute equaliser at Birmingham City. The promoted hosts took an early lead through Oceane Hurtre, who capitalised on a lapse in concentration from Caitlin Hayes before running into the box and slotting past Chiamaka Nnadozie. Lily Crosthwaite made it two in the second half with a low driven shot across the goalkeeper, but Brighton gathered momentum when Olivia García came off the bench to close the gap in the 77th minute. As Birmingham attempted to hold on for the win, Kiko Seike raced into the box with just a few seconds remaining and made the most of a small gap between Sophie Baggaley and the near post to score.
At Goodison Park, Charlton fell to a 1-0 defeat by Everton following an own goal and two red cards. After a goalless first half, things quickly went downhill for the promoted side when Ashleigh Neville saw red for a high boot which caught Ruby Mace. With 13 minutes of normal time to play, the visitors found themselves behind when Holly McNamara’s cross deflected off the leg of Leighanne Robe and into the net. In the latter stages, Charlton went down to nine players after substitute Hawa Cissoko received two yellow cards in quick succession.
Liverpool came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw against Tottenham thanks to a 60th-minute header from Aurelie Csillag. Spurs took the lead just before half-time when Signe Gaupset’s effort was deflected in off the foot of Liverpool’s Sam Kerr. The hosts levelled things up at the hour-mark after Csillag got in front of Lize Kop to head home Fuka Nagano’s cross.
